Portland is located about 78 miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis, and about 42 miles south of Fort Wayne. The population of Portland in 2010 was 6, 186 people.

Portland is home to several notable people, such as Kevin Ford, a NASA astronaut who piloted the space shuttle mission to the International Space Station in 2009. In addition, Elwood Haynes, an industrialist who invented the clutch-driven automobile in 1894, was born in Portland.
