Mitchell is located about 77 miles southwest of downtown Indianapolis, and about 30 miles south of Bloomington. The population of Mitchell in 2010 was 4, 350 people.

Mitchell is the birthplace of Virgil “Gus” Grissom, an NASA astronaut and hero, who became the 2nd American to fly in space aboard the Liberty Bell space capsule.
