Managing Insect Encounters While Camping

How to Deal With Insects Indoors and Outdoors

At most campgrounds, but not all, campers will encounter mosquitoes, bees, ticks and other various insects. The bites and stings may cause discomfort, itching, swelling and possibly allergic reactions. In addition, some insects like ticks and mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, West Nile virus, etc. Although the chances of acquiring one of these diseases are rare, it is always “better to be safe than sorry”. A safe and effective repellent is a “must have” for any camping trip.

Different types of insects can disrupt a camper’s sleep, thereby reducing the overall sleep quality. Nothing can be more irritating than mosquitoes buzzing around in an RV or tent. Other flying insects can also add to the problem. Also, food contamination is a concern. Flies, bees, gnats and ants are quite eager to land on that hot dog, or the pile of sweet baked beans. These critters could contaminate the food, causing it to be uncomfortable or unsafe to eat.

The constant presence of annoying insects can also hinder the enjoyment of hiking, fishing, boating, relaxing on the beach and other outdoor activities. This can impact the entire camping experience.

With some of today’s modern and safe insect repellents on the market, there really is no reason to have the insects ruin your camping experience. When properly used, they are designed to be completely safe to use without the normal skin irritation and other adverse reactions caused by some repellents.

It’s going to happen. In almost every case, you will encounter insects while camping. And while preparing for a camping trip, it is important to pack some safe and effective insect repellents. It will add assurance that spending time outdoors can be stress-free and enjoyable for campers of all ages.
