Orland is located about 142 miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis, and about 11 miles northwest of Angola. The population of Orland in 2010 was 434 people.

Orland was considered to be a safe stop on the Underground Railroad for sheltering and protecting runaway slaves heading to Canada. A beautiful home, known as the Emsberger House, or originally known as the Parker House, was a stop on the Underground Railroad.
